Keep in touch with your friends and family...
meet new people and make new friends!

We welcome you to try out our chat rooms and join in with others to talk about day-to-day matters; or meet new people, socialise with friends or discuss a variety of subjects and topics with other chatters according to your interests. We offer a number of chat rooms for people of all ages except for minors under the age of 13 who, unfortunately, are  prohi-bited from using our chat facility. Click on the 'Who's Chatting' panel (on the right) to find out who is currently chatting, and in which room.

Click here for simple instructions on how to use this chat facility. Please read these instructions.

If you are new to online chatting, just login with the nickname "Newbie", plus any 3-digit number following this name, e.g. Newbie456. Enter any room that is free or not too busy, and try out the features of our chat facility. With a little practise you will feel less nervous about chatting.

IMPORTANT NOTE (1): Please be aware that whilst we support free speech, we also encourage people to recognise and respect the rights of others. In this regard we have a set of rules and regulations for users of our chat facility -- with the aim of creating a safe, fun and exciting environment -- which also means a place where we do not tolerate behaviour that is harmful to others. Please make yourself familiar with "Your Obligations & Privacy" as well as our Basic Chat Rules (printed below) before you join the chat. HAVE FUN!

YOUR OBLIGATIONS AND PRIVACY:

Please be informed that by logging in to our chat room facility you confirm that you fully understand and agree with the Terms & Conditions of Use of this Website (and particularly the Terms set out under the heading "Forums, Chat Rooms and Interactive Areas" and all provisions that follow thereafter), and also our Privacy Policy which protects your rights and privacy. You are therefore entirely responsible and liable for all activities conducted while using our chat facility.

Please also be advised that from time to time we monitor all public messages (but not private conversations) that are posted in the chat rooms, and on occasions have a chat supervisor in attendance. The chat supervisor has admin-istrative powers to firstly warn and subsequently dismiss or permanently ban any chatter who repeatedly violates our chat rules. We also log IP addresses of all chatters to enable us to take the required action of banning a particular IP address if it becomes necessary. However, in accordance with our Privacy Policy, your IP address (which only identifies your computer) will not remain in storage on our servers or databases when you log out of this chat facility.

This chat facility is remotely hosted, and the remote host SigmaChat is fully responsible for the quality and/or reliability of this service, except in instances where the quality and/or reliability is not within their powers of control. The remote host may collect IP Addresses, log chat sessions (but not private conversations) and store cookies on their servers in order to provide The Irish Scene with this chat room service as defined in their contract with us, and are fully responsible for protecting your privacy in accordance with their Privacy Policy.

IMPORTANT NOTE (2): To enter the chat you would need to login with a Username (or Nickname) which must be no more than 15 characters in length and not vulgar or obscene in nature. Please note that you must never login with a Username or Nickname in this particular format: John@ISCS (as an example) or resembling it in any way. This format of identity is reserved for chat supervisors only and appears in bold text. You may freely chat with a chat supervisor at any time if you so desire.

You do not require a Password to log in at this stage, however, in the near future we will accept requests for Username and Password registration from regular chatters who wish to have a unique ID that cannot be used by anyone else.

IMPORTANT NOTE (3): There are two chat sub-rooms which have been designated for use by participants aged between 13 and 17, namely "Cool Chat (13-17)" and "Celtic Groove (13-17)". Individuals between the ages of 13 and 17 are obliged to stay within the confines of these rooms. We also have a sub-room for the 17-21 age group – "Carrick a Rede (17-21)". Whilst we aim to keep the Content on this Website suitable for family browsing and viewing, we strongly advise that parents, guardians or child-minders/carers should closely monitor their children's use of this Website. We also advise all adults aged 18 and above (excepting our appointed chat supervisors) to refrain from entering rooms designated for the 13-17 year age group. Likewise, participants aged between 13 and 17 should avoid all rooms that are not labelled "13-17".

IMPORTANT NOTE (4): Although chat rooms can be fun and entertaining, as well as a source for knowledge, one may also encounter instances where abusive language is used, which may cause some participants to feel uncomfortable. It is strictly our policy to discourage the use of abusive language (please see Basic Chat Rules) and for this reason we employ a 'profanity filter'. If you use profanity, whether just one word or contained within a string of text, the word or entire string of text will not display and you will be asked to "rephrase your sentence".

YOU CAN HELP: In providing our visitors with this chat room service it is our aim to keep it 'clean', and free of chatters who are constantly impolite and offensive or have a tendency to harass others. This chat room service is accessible from anywhere in the world, and whilst we shall do our best to supervise chats whenever possible, your help in suppressing or keeping out unruly participants would be much appreciated. In this regard, all participants have the right to kindly request a non-compliant chatter to refrain from being abusive or unruly, and if necessary you may politely ask him/her to leave the chat room. This is the most effective means of keeping our chat rooms 'clean' and orderly. In the near future, you may also be given the means to report unruly chatters to The Irish Scene admin office so that we may look into the matter and take appropriate action.

Instructions on how to use our chat facility

The above image is a screen-shot of the chat window which is divided into 4 main sections:

(1) The Message or Chat area where all messages are displayed;

(2) The Users section where all participants' names appear;

(3) The Rooms section which displays all the rooms in a drop-down list. Clicking

      on any room name will transfer you to that room;

(4) The Message Entry box.

Private and Public messaging

To chat to all participants, enter text in the Message Entry box and click on 'Send', (or press 'Enter'). Your message will appear in the Message or Chat area. To chat to another participant privately, simply double-click on that user's name, and a 'private messaging' window will appear for you to begin your conversation in private. When a participant sends you a private message the 'private messaging' window pops up automatically.

You can ignore public as well as private messages from any user by applying the ignore command which is found in the pop-up menu that appears when you right-click on a Username. This is an effective method of discouraging a participant who may be annoying you. It may also be a good idea to notify the participant that he/she has been put on 'ignore' (e.g. John, you have been put on ignore). When a participant has been put on ignore, any message that he/she sends will not be visible to you.

Text Effects, Emoticons, Sounds etc

The Button Toolbar located just above the Message Entry box provides access to several features of the software. Below is a description of these buttons (from A to L) with reference to the screen-shot above.

(A) When you click on this button a pop-up window will appear allowing you to change text colour. Choose a colour, click on Apply, and then OK. The colour you choose will remain the default colour even if you log out and log back in again.

(B) This is the Emoticon (or Smiley) button. Click on it once and a pop-up window will appear for you to select an emoticon. From L to R the emoticons are: Blink, Sad, Smile, Smug, Angry, Unsure, Grin, Surprised, Tongue, Wink, and Laugh. Emoticon triggers are text-based and the text appears in the Message Entry box when you choose an emoticon. Click on 'Send' (or press Enter) for the emoticon to appear in the Message area. Typing the corresponding text for the emoticon in the Message Entry box and clicking on 'Send' (or pressing Enter) will give you the same result.

(C) This button allows you to select a variety of sounds which could enhance your chatting experience. These 'audio emoticons' are also activated by a text-based trigger. Select a 'sound' and click on 'Send' (or press Enter).

(D) This is the Time-Stamp button which allows you to display local time. The default option is off.

(E) This is the audio button which allows you to enable or disable sound within the chat room. Sound is enabled on default.

(F) This button allows you to copy Content from the chat room. Clicking on it will bring up a window which displays all the text from the Message area. Note that the text which displays may not be the full transcript. Highlight the text, right-click the mouse button and choose 'Copy' (or press 'Ctrl+C'). This text can then be Pasted into any text program.

(G) This button allows you to increase the current font size. The font size you choose will remain the default font size even if you log out and log back in again.

(H) This button allows you to decrease the current font size.

(I) This button allows you to clear the contents of the Message or Chat area.

(J) This button allows you to float or dock the chat room. It's a good idea to float it so that you can resize the chat window to any size you require.

(K) This button allows you to access the chat room Help file.

(L) Clicking on this button will log you out of the chat room.

Automated Messages, Logging In and Logging Out

This chat room facility has a number of automated messages which inform you when a participant has entered or left a certain room, and also which room he/she has relocated to. A message will also appear when a participant logs out of the chat room. If a chat supervisor decides to stop you from chatting, he/she may silence you for 30 seconds, and a message will appear telling you so. If you've been 'kicked' from the chat room for being unruly, you may be able to LOGIN again to rejoin the chat, however, you would need to comply with the chat rules if you do so. NOTE: ALWAYS LOGOUT OF THE CHAT FACILITY WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED CHATTING, otherwise other participants may assume that you are still in the chat.
