The West's Awake

In a word, the recent championships were MAGNIFICENT from a WA pers-pective. The games went off without a hitch and WA should be rightly proud of the organisation during the week. Well done to the executive committee and all the volunteers, too many to mention in this column. We have included a two-page pictorial review of the week in this edition as a tribute to all con-cerned.

Three of the four titles were captured by our local teams, a marvellous outcome for all their efforts. Congrat-ulations to the successful Ladies, Men and Minor teams and their respective coaches Fred McCormack, Marty Greene and John Lehane and their support crews. I’m sure they will also join me in congratulating our remaining Minor and Ladies teams (coaches John Collins and Julie Langley).

Leaving perhaps the best wine ‘til last, who could forget the Herculean efforts of our hurlers and their coach Tim Hickey and manager Barney McKenna.

Knowing the obstacles involved, this was a group of players that did not exist until early this year and their dedication to the cause knew no bounds. They pushed the perennial champions New South Wales all the way in a 3-17 to 3-8 defeat in a very sporting encounter. A small indication of the kinship that both shared during the week was the pooling of hurleys and the genuine friendship and respect for all to see between Tim and his NSW counterpart, Steve Carey. Well done to all, our Gaelic Games are alive and well and we look forward to next year’s championships in Sydney.

Enjoy our pictorial tribute and one final note. We were delighted to have the new Irish Ambassador, Mr Mairtin O’Fainin, in attendance. This was his first official engagement in Australia, having only arrived in Canberra a week earlier. His presence was appreciated in the circumstances and he capped off the occasion by making the presentation of the hurling trophy (The Jim Guiney Trophy) to the victorious NSW captain, Declan Meagher. The presentation dinner at the Convention Centre was attended by almost 400 people and capped off a wonderful week of Gaelic Games.

John Lehane

Paul Kilbane of WA put the icing on the cake for a great night by being nominated the football player of the tournament.
