Over 280 Years of Service

by Danielle O'Leary

There are people in this world that are rare, exquisite and truly fabulous. Possibly more than they will ever know, the Connolly sisters, Teresina, Marguerita, Helen, Kathleen and Peggy from County Mayo, are these people and they came to Australia in the 1940s and 50s to follow their vocation with the St John of God sisters. To date, the five sisters have a miraculous 280 combined years of service to the health system. And they’ve had a wonderful time changing lives along the way.

connolly_sisters1Sister Marguerita Connolly fell in love with the sisters as a child and knew it was the life she wanted to live. Sister Teresina Connolly had thought about it when she was a child. Penny Groves, a former Connolly sister, thought it was “like a piece of heaven walking into the convent, it was absolutely beautiful”. These powerful religious thoughts stemmed from their strong religious upbringing. Sister Maguerita was only 15 years old when she joined and remembered the great force religion had over their lives. “The Angelis bell would ring from church and we would stop no matter where we were,” she thought. “Out in the fields doing the corn or the hay, Dad would stop, take off his cap and say the Angelis and that you know was embedded in all of us. Then we had prayers at night, the rosary was said every night.”
